Name: Derek Lamont
Nickname(optional): The Grand Artiste (This is what he calls himself)
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Position: Chaotic... maybe evil, maybe neutral.
Power(s):
Channeling (Spirit): The only thing he can use for is illusions. Channeling is the quick and dirty form of magic. Well, channeling is the little brother of evocation, which is the quick and dirty form of magic. Evokers can generally use several of the five elements: fire, earth, wind, water, and spirit. Channelers can use exactly one. Derek uses spirit for short-term illusions. In this case, short-term means a few seconds, less than a minute. The tricks he pulls out frequently are the following:
Invisibility (which should be obvious)
Illusory Terrain (changes the appearance of the near by area to disorient his opponents for a few rounds)
Terrifying Illusion (makes an illusion so terrifying that it could potentially leave the faint of heart brain dead)
Duplicate (creates a couple of illusory copies of himself that last for a few rounds)
The key thing to realize here is that this kind of magic is stressful, and will leave him with minor mental damage – nothing he can’t recover from, though, as long as he doesn’t dump too much energy into it.
He has a focus item that helps him make his illusions. It takes the form of a can of spray paint, although there is no aerosol or paint inside.
Ritual (Veils): Again, only useful for illusions. Ritual is the little brother of full thaumaturgy, which is the slow, delicately prepared kind of magic. This sort of magic requires a circle, which he usually makes out of one of the many cans of spray paint that he carries on his person. It also takes a fair amount of time, so it’s not so useful in a combat situation. These ritual illusions will last longer, lasting until the next sunrise by default, or longer if he puts more energy into the illusion. Further more, he can cause damage to himself or others in order to strengthen the spell – but only if they’re willing.
He has a different focus item to help him with this kind of magic as well: his rose-tinted glasses.
The Sight: The Sight is basically opening one’s third eye to see the world as it is, instead of how it seems. It’s really good at picking up magic, but there’s also a downside: if you look at anything that’s too powerful with The Sight, it hurts, and makes it harder to close The Sight. That’s why most wizards and sorcerers that have The Sight only use it sparingly. The other reason most of the people who have it use it sparingly it that what has been seen cannot be unseen. Those images stay with you, no matter how terrifying or awe-inspiring they may be. They are always as immediately clear as the moment they were seen. Down that path lay only madness, so most will only use The Sight in case of emergency.
Derek Lamont has The Sight. Derek Lamont cannot close The Sight.
Soulgaze: Soulgaze is essentially an applied version of The Sight. Effectively, whenever two people lock eyes for a few seconds, and at least one of them has Soulgaze, a mental connection opens up, and the two people get a glimpse at each other’s soul. It’s largely metaphorical, and it can be stressful to those involved. However, it can only happen once between any two people. Also like The Sight, you cannot forget what you have seen in a Soulgaze.
Cassandra’s Tears: Cassandra’s Tears is an affliction that gives the affected person brief, vague glances of the future. They may not necessarily make a lot of sense to him – or anyone else -
Enchanted Item (Hoodie of Invisibility): Derek has an enchanted item that he has fused some of his magic into. His hoodie will let him turn invisible for about fifteen seconds, five times per day. The point of this is to reduce the amount of strain he takes in using his own magic – he can use this instead of his own channeling magic.
Graffiti: On top of all this, he’s a pretty good graffiti artist. Occasionally he’ll wrap a little bit of illusion magic into the graffiti to make it look nicer and last longer than usual.
Weapon(s): The only things he has that resemble weapons are the various colors of spray paint that he carries on his person at most times. He’s got holsters for them inside his hoodie. In real emergencies, he’s got a lighter to go with it.
Picture(optional):
Appearance: Derek is just under six feet tall, and on the lanky side. He’s got medium to dark skin, and brown eyes. His hair is a little shaggy, since he hasn’t had it cut in a while. He always wears his hoodie, which is a sort of pavement grey color. His jeans and his shirt are equally non-descript, and he blends into a crowd rather easily. His focus items, the magic spray paint can and rose-colored glasses are on his person at all times, and he’s usually wearing the glasses – he doesn’t need them for his vision, just for his spellcasting.
Personality: Well, uh. Derek’s more than a little bit insane. Kinda comes with the having The Sight and not being able to close it. He likes to speak in riddles and metaphors whenever he can – or maybe he’s just not capable of anything else. He also has one of those annoying, creepy, high-pitched giggles that he lets off frequently. He generally takes great pride in his art, and doesn’t care much for anything else – including other people’s minds. He’s naturally attracted to magic like a moth to a flame. Finally, since each person’s magic is unique, he has a knack for knowing what people have done with magic – whether or not they told him.
Original World: Earth (Chicago, setting of The Dreseden Files)
Current Residing World: He’s kind of a wanderer. Through a mishap with a portal to the Nevernever, he'll end up in Traverse Town, first.
History/Background: Derek was just your typical thug on the streets of urban Chicago. Graffiti was kind of his thing, and he’d tag all over the inner-city. He didn’t exactly live the high life, but he was respected by his peers, more or less. Then the next big thing came along: ThreeEye, a drug that gave normal, everyday mortals The Sight. They couldn’t really control it, and it left them at least slightly mentally scarred, but it did go away after a while.
Or at least, that’s how it was supposed to work. The problem is, Derek overdosed on the drug. As a result, he ended up with The Sight, permanently. As mentioned above, he can’t close it, and he can’t control it. That’s what drove him mad.
After a while, he started trying to come up with ways to cope with his new terrifying visions. It was then that he started developing and learning his own brand of illusion magic. You see, he would use his illusions as a way of externalizing his insanity, making it easier for him to cope. Since then, he’s kind of just wandered the streets of Chicago, driving people mad a little at a time.
Role Playing Sample:
*Klacka-klacka-klack*
*fsssssssssssshhhhhhh*
Derek squinted as he put the finishing touches on his graffiti. It was yet another beautiful work of art, if he did say so himself. This was the twenty third car he had tagged on this train, and each one had a unique tag. All of them were personally signed by The Grand Artiste, of course. The train continued rumbling onward towards it’s destination, and he knew he wouldn’t have time to tag another car before the end of the train rolled by.
He broke the circle of spray paint on the ground with his foot, and watched the train as it passed, a good hundred yards away. As he did, the floating illusion snapped onto the closest car of the train, and plastered itself in place. It really was a nice one. It really was a shame they would all disappear at sunrise. Derek strolled away from his vantage point on an overpass near the train tracks, just as invisible as he had been when he arrived.
This was fun.
